Cambria Reveal AR
At trade shows, in the galleries, out in the field and at build sites, our sales force and designers would be in the process of showing Cambria designs with their clients, but our Design Brochure and other print materials only showed 1" X 1" thumbnails of a reduced 12" x 12" cut of our full design slabs. This was a big problem because most of our new designs have a big, full slab movement that a 12"x12" sample that was reduced to a 1" x 1" thumbnail couldn't capture. Because our design palette was constantly growing and we had 151 and counting (close to 200 now), it wouldn't be cost-effective to print them.
The solution was to create an AR app that would allow users to point tablets and phones at our designs and instantly see the full slab pop up in 3D Augmented Reality. Users can zoom in and out, and slide their phones from left and right to see the full slab up close.
Different lighting reflections off of the printed page in different enviromnments would sometimes result in inconsistent readings of the AR triggers on some devices. We addressed this by showing the name of each slab, in Morse Code, underneath the slab thumbnail. This gave us consistent readings, and therefore consistent AR results. When we asked users what they thought about the Morse Code dashes underneath the thumbnails, they responded that they thought it was just a cool design element and liked it. This app and this process are used in all of our printed materials to this day.
